biography

A deep musical berth and a broad understanding of the role of music in film has helped composer Dave Christensen become one of Los Angeles’ rising talents within a very short time.

Before arriving in L.A. in the winter of 2006, Dave spent his career as a performer and songwriter, spanning the musical globe from Africa to Abbey Road, from Mexico to Memphis taking long reprises in Jamaican dance halls, jazz clubs, blues bars and Bourbon Street, which is evident in his first release, “The Bosom and the Pool” on Nextagem Records. Taking a cue from his early musical role model, Danny Elfman, Dave made the jump from band-based eccentric songwriting to film scoring with relative ease.

Dave takes great care in navigating the space between the physical and emotional universes, the main dynamic that lies at the heart of any film score. Embodying the personalities of an accomplished songwriter, a prolific improviser and an intuitive arranger and orchestrator, Dave’s music is deep and rich in texture, yet accessible to the listener in its subtlety. On “The Bosom and the Pool”, using over 35 musicians to create varied textures and rhythms, he arranged the traditional instruments, such as organ, horns, guitar, strings, accordion, woodwinds and percussion to create unique sounds that juxtapose different musical neighborhoods. Since settling in L.A. Dave has expanded that idea to encompass the full orchestra as well as purely electronic instruments.

Dave started studying music at age 6 and song writing at age 12. At the age of 10 he started studying the language of jazz and continued through college at DePaul University in Chicago studying improvisational music and poetry, developing an understanding between the music of the spoken word and the communicative power of music, which has given him the ability to meld music with dialogue and image.

Through Brian Benison Music Inc. Dave has worked on projects for Don Davis ("The Matrix" Trilogy), Kenny G, The Grammys Camp, and George Callendrelli (who was nominated for a Grammy in 2007 for his arrangements of songs by Ella Fitzgerald).

As a composer, Dave has scored and performed the music for "Blue Plate"; a short film released through Visionworks Productions, and has completed his first feature, “Summer 11”. His work ethic as a composer is strong, but with a humble and servant’s heart he is fully aware that he is on a project to solely support the filmmakers vision, and along with the whole team, help make films and shows that are lasting and memorable.
